Gentlemen
The local Moorish Authorities have informed me that a Moorish Subject named Ramo Abitbol, widow of Joseph Hadida, deceased, lays claim to a large amount of real property in this town, and that she states she is prevented by you from getting possession of the same.
I have therefore to request that you will be good enough to furnish me, within three months from this date, with a clear and explicit statement of your claims against the said Ramo Abitbol, in order that I may submit the same, through your Attorney, to the Hebrew Tribunal of Mogador which will have to judge the case.

I have received your letter of the 29th ultimo with reference to the claim put forward by Mrs Ramo Hadida to the property in this town.
It will be neccessary for you to appoint as soon as possible, an Attorney in Mogador, to represent you at the Hebrew Tribunal which is to decide the case, and you must furnish him with all the documents required to prove what you state to me in your letter.
Your Attorney shall, of course, receive from me all the support which your interests may require.

Indisposition has prevented me from answering your letters of the 22 January and 20 February are thus.
If you refer to my letter of the 26th of July 1865 you will find that it is your own fault that you have not been represented at the Hebrew Tribunal of Mogador, but in order to enable you to name an Attorney and to produce any additional evidence bearing on the pending question, I have stopped further proceedings in the matter during three months from the 1st of May next.
The decision of the Mogador tribunal is not final, appeal can be made to Marocco.

[לאחר התנצלות על איחור בתשובה למכתביו מ־22 בינואר ומ־20 בפברואר], אם אתה מתייחס למכתבי מ־26 ביולי 1865, הרי באשמתך לא מצגת על־ידי בא־כוח בפני בית־הדין היהודי במוגדור. אבל כדי לאפשר לך למנות פרקליט ולהציג עדויות נוספות, עצרתי את הטיפול בנושא למשך שלושת החודשים הבאים החל ב־1 במאי. ההחלטה של בית הדין במוגדור אינה סופית, וניתן לערער [בפני בית הדין] במראכש.

…With regard to the query put to you by Dr Thevenin I have to state that the widow Esther Halfon, daughter of the late Abraham Cohen is the person duly and regularly authorized to receive the rent of the house tenanted by Dr Thevenin, but the Doctor may, if he likes, pay the rent into my hands, as you caused to be done with the rent for the four past months, and thus remove from himself all responsibility as regards the question of the next of kin of Abraham Cohen.

הערת המחבר : דניאל בן אברהם כהן נזכר ב־21 בפברואר 1861 כמי שגר במדינה ( = הרובע המוסלמי) במוגדור: 830/2 FO. ב־1 בספטמבר 1864 בתור אזרח בריטי בעל בית ומחסן בעיר: /99 FO 631/3 121 = FO, מהסוחרים החשובים בעיר. פעיל בחיי הציבור, ומ־1873 נשיא הקהילה ונשיא הסניף המקומי של כי״ח, תמך בחינוך מודרני. לחם במיסיון האנגליקני שפעל במוגדור, וביולי 1879 השתתף במשלחת של מנהיגי הקהילה אצל הקונסול הבריטי בקשר לפעולות המסיון.
