My Lord,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Lordship’s despatch, N° 9, of the 18^th ultimo, transmitting to me a copy of a letter from the Secretary of the Society for promoting Christianity amongst the Jews…

I am glad to perceive that the Society has withdrawn the charges brought against me by their missionary, under the conviction that they were unfounded; but I confess that, after an attentive perusal of M^r Layard’s letter, I am disappointed that the Enquiry has not taken place at Tangier as was proposed, for, in the first place, there is no mention made of the British Vice Consul, M^r Reade in M^r Layard’s letter, nor is there any withdrawal of the charges made against him, neither does the Society offer that reparation to myself which, under the circumstances of the case, I would submit to your Lordship, I am entitled to expect.

The charges and imputations which had been put forward by M^r Markheim against us, and which were made the basis of M^r Goodhart’s [6 מזכיר האגודה הלונדונית להפצת הנצרות בין היהודים] representations, were, that we had committed generally practices “of a discreditable character”. M^r Reade was accused of violating the wives and daughters of the Jewish inhabitants. I was accused of tyrannical and arbitrary conduct towards the Jews, and it was insinuated in both the letters of M^r Markheim and M^r Goodhart that I had connived at an attempt of burglary upon M^r Markheim’s house, and of causing the husbands or brothers of the victims of M^r Reade’s lust to be imprisoned if they made any complaint against M^r Reade.

Now, my Lord, I am persuaded if any one of these charges had been corroborated in the Enquiry which had been proposed, Your Lordship would have immediately dismissed both M^r Reade and myself from Her Majesty’s service, and indeed public opinion would have required such a step…

מאשר קבלת המכתב מ־18 בחודש שעבר עם העתק מכתבה של מזכירות ־האגודה המיסיונרית הלונדונית׳. אני שבע רצון מן העובדה שהאגודה הנ״ל חזרה בה מההאשמות שהאשימני בהן המיסיונר והכירה בכך שאין להן כל בסיס. התאכזבתי לקרוא במכתבו של מר לאיארד שלא בוצעה חקירה בטנג׳יר כפי שהוצע, שכן אין במכתב אזכור של סגן־הקונסול ריד ואין חזרה מן ההאשמות שהועלו עדו, וכן אין האגודה מציעה פיצוי על ההאשמות שהאשימנו מר מרקהיים. מר ריד הואשם בחילול כבודן של נשים ושל בנות יהודיות, ואני הואשמתי כי איימתי על הבעלים ועל האחים של קורבנותיו של מר ריד שאם יתלוננו על מר ריד אגרום למאסרם. לו היו האשמות אלה מתאמתות בחקירה, היית מפטר מיד את מר ריד ואותי, ודעת הקהל אכן היתה מחייבת צעד כזה…
