- Dupare Esq(uire) Anglo Jewish Association Sir
It is with great regret that I have to inform the Executive Committee of a barbarous & cruel act of the Governor of Imentanout, a province two days journey from Mogador, towards our coreligionists residing there. In that province which is under the governorship of Caid Azad El Meubhee, there are since about 70 years ago, 4 Jewish quarters or Mellahs, which give shelter to about 600 Jews, including wives & children, who have their own property, consisting of houses & lands which they cultivate for the maintenance of their families.
About two weeks ago the said Governor having just returned from the Sheriffian Court of Morocco informed the Jews that they were to leave immediately and go where they may choose,to enforce this act of cruelty he placed 12
soldiers near the Mellahs to hasten their departure, to whom the Jews have to pay 12
dollars per day, the Caid stating that such are the Imperial orders. The Jews signified to their Caid that besides their own property they had goods and produce to a very considerable amount belonging to several other merchants of the coast, & therefore they required a regular time to collect them, but the Governor said he would not listen to them at all & that they were to leave at once no matter what they had.
The last news I have from the Jews of Imentanout is that they are in the most awful position of oppression & they had to send away their wives & children as they were not allowed to stay any longer & that they were also decided to abandon all and depart at once for fear of being murdered. God knows where they are now exiled.
It is much to be feared that other Caids may do the same to the Jews dwelling within their jurisdiction if efficient measures are not taken at once to prevent it. I informed the British Consul in this town, & I have also written to the Sheriffian Court & last week when the French Minister was here on his way to Morocco, I applied to him soliciting his kind interference on behalf of our poor banished brethren.
I earnestly hope that the gentlemen of the Executive Committee & other influential members will take the neccessary steps for the redress of the poor Jews of Imentanout & to put a stop to such scandalous & barbarous acts of cruelty.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Yours very truly si(gned) Reuben Elmaleh
