L'ENSEIGNEMENT RELIGIEUX – SLA

THE CHEDER – SLA

The painting is composed of 36 figures, in the center, the Melamed, or 'rabi', is reciting the "aleph bet״

, with pupils around him, each reciting scripture. On the left, the melamed's assistant, holding a felaka, is punishing a pupil.. Another child is standing in the corner. On the right, a women is bringing in a bowl of couscous for the pupils.

THE  HEDER — Before the French occupied Morocco in 1912, only boys, who would  enter cheder ('Sla') from age 3-4 on, were given an education. The child would learn to read and write, and was trained to participate in the life of the synagogue: prayers, reading the Torah and Haftorah (prophets). The studies were conducted  6 days a week from morning to evening, with a short break for lunch, and on Shabbat afternoon.

Heders functioned in every town and village. In the larger cities, Talmud and Halacha (legalistics) were taught In Yeshivot (academies). The study was in groups, with the Rabbi going from group to group with an assistant, who helped to review and memorize the material. The student remained in the Heder from the age of 3 until his bar-mitzva, and then went on to learn a trade, or to a Yeshlva.

THE  FELAKA — A severe punishment customary in the heder. The felaka was made out of a wooden pole in which there were two holes at either end, through which a rope was threaded. The pupil was lain on the floor and his legs inserted in between the rope. Two children would begin to twist the pole and slowly the legs of the pupil would be entwined. The legs of the child who was being punished were hanging in the air, and the melamed or his assistant would whip the child 39 times (3 times 13, as in the number of words In the verse," But He was full of compassion, forgiving iniquity, and He did not destroy them; often He turned away His anger, not stirring up all His wrath." (Psalms, 78, 38).

COUSCOUS   FOR  THE  CHILD  IN  HEDER — There was a folk belief common among the women of Morocco that every woman who had a bad dream was to bring a pot of "couscous" to the heder pupils, and by virtue of this act the bad dream would be void.

The Rabbi would eat first, after making the blessing and having each of the students repeat "amen" after him. This custom was common also prior to entrance of a new student to the heder.
