Pidioun Haben

PIDYON HABEN

The redeeming of the Firstborn son.

In the center of this painting we see a couple consulting with a rabbi. The young mother  is concerned. The infant  lies on the table, and on the right are psalmodists and musicians. On the other side women are serving refreshments while calling out the traditional cry of joy. The picturee confains 18 figures, the numeral 18 corresponding to 'life'.

A firstborn male must be redeemed from the Cohen (Priest) by his father and mother on the 30th day of his birth, unless the mother is the daughter of a Cohen herself. In Morocco, it was the custom to redeem the child by means of seven gold bracelefs, part of the mother's  jewelry. After receiving the bracelets, the Cohen returns them and receives a money gift instead.

Following the redemption ceremony and the blessing of the Cohen over the newborn child, there is a feast. The Cohen says the blessing over the wine and the spices and says the bless¡rig, "He who has blessed the foetus in the womb of the mother" and so on. The psalmists and musicians accompany the Mitzvah feast with music and song.
