הנרות הן סגולה לשלום בית. האשה טורחת לכבוד השבת ומדליקה את הנרות. על כן צריך אדם להאיר פנים לאשתו בליל שבת: ״צריך אדם לפייס אשתו בשבת״(תיקוני זוהר פ״ו) ויש להיזהר מאוד שלא יהיה חס ושלום מחלוקת בין איש לאשתו(על פי הזוהר, ״לא תבערו אש״ — אזהרה שלא תהיה מחלוקת בבית ביום השבת).
