התמונה מורכבת משני שלבים (ויש בה 26 דמויות): העלייה לתורה, וחתני בר־המצווה הולכים לבתיהם כשהם מלווים בקהל המתפללים ובתופים.
LA BAR MITSVA
Le tableau se compose de deux élémenls (et met en scène 26 personnages): la montée à la Torah et la procession en musique de la synagogue à la maison.
BAR MITZVAH
This painting is composed of two stages and 26 figures. The bar-mitzva boys are first called to the Torah and then proceed home accompanied by the congregants.
היה מנהג, שלחגיגת בר־מצווה של בן עשירים צורף בן עניים, כדי לקיים מצוות לשמח יתום ואלמנה: בשמחתך — זכור את העני.
בהגיע הנער לגיל 13, הוא נכנס לעול המצוות: הוא חייב בקיום המצוות ומצטרף למניין.
את יומו הראשון אחרי גיל המצוות הוא חונך בשתי מצוות: תפילין וטלית, והוא עורך את מסיבת בר־המצווה. מקורה של מסיבה זו הוא הפסוק ״ויגדל הילד ויגמל ויעש אברהם משתי גדול ביום היגמל את יצחק״(בראשית כ״א, ה׳). אברהם ערך משתה ביום גמילת בנו — מעבד בין ילדות לנערות.
חגיגת בר־המצווה נערכת, בדרך כלל, בליל יום שני, או בליל יום חמישי בשבוע, כך שהנער עולה למחרת לתורה. בבוקר, המורה אשר הכין את הנער לבר־מצווה, הלא הוא ה״מלמד״ ב״חדר״, מגיע לבית ה״חתן׳ עם חבריו של הנער, עוטף את ה״חתן״ בטלית ועוטרו בתפילין, ומלווים אותו לבית־הכנסת.
אחרי התפילה יוצאים כל הקהל, הנגנים והפייטנים בתהלוכה מבית־הכנסת לבית חתן בר־המצווה, כשהוא עטוף בטלית ומעוטר בתפילין ונישא על כתפי האנשים או על כסא. הסובבים אותו מפזרים סביבו סוכריות ומתיזים עליו מי בושם. בראש התהלוכה — שני נערים ובידיהם פמוטים עם נרות גדולים ומקושטים.
בבית החתן מתכבדים כל האנשים בארוחת בוקר חגיגית יחד עם חתן בר־המצווה.
Il était de coutume dans les familles riches de fêter en même temps que la Bar-Mitsva du fils, celle d'un enfant pauvre conformément au commandement: "dans ta joie souviens-toi du pauvre".
A l'âge de 13 ans le garçon entre dans la communauté des croyants et doit se soumettre aux prescriptions et en contre-partie II est admis à faire partie du minyan. Les deux premières mitsvot. le port du châle de prière, Talit, et des phylactères, les Téfilin. A l'origine de cette cérémonie le verset 21:8 de la Genèse: "L'enfant grandit il fut sevré. Abraham fit un grand festin le jour où l'on sevra Isaac״. Abraham a fait un grand festin pour marquer le passage de son fils de l'enfance à l'adolescence.
La cérémonie de Bar-Mitsva avait lieu en général le dimanche ou le mercredi de manière à ce que le communiant puisse monter le lendemain à la Torah. Le matin, le maître qui l'a préparé, met au communiant le talit et le téfilin et tous l'accompagnent à la synagogue,
Après l'office tous les participants s'ébranlent en procession de la synagogue à la maison accompagnés de musiciens. Le communiant est porté sur une chaise ou sur les épaules, revêtu de son châle de prière. On lui lance des bombons, on l'asperge de parfums. En tête du cortège deux enfants portant des chandeliers avec des cierges décorés.
A l'arrivée à la maison tout le monde est Invité à un copieux petit déjeûner.
The poor were by custom invited to accompany the sons of wealthy families at the bar-mitzvah, "bringing happiness to the orphan and widow״ (Scripture).
At 13, a Jewish boy is obligated to fulfil the commandments and may join a quorum (minyan) for prayer. The first day begins with the Talllt (prayer shawl) and Tefillln (phylacteries) and the ensuing celebration. This celebration originates in the verse "And Abraham made a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned״ (Genesis 21, 5), The teacher who prepared the boy for the bar-mitzva readings arrives at the boy's home with his scholmates, wraps him in the Tallit and helps him with the ritual placement and tying round of the Tefillln on his left arm and forehead, and they all proceed to synagogue.
After prayers, a procession of all the congregants, musicians and psalmodists emerges and wends its way to the boy's home for the festive breakfast. Still wrapped in his Tallit and Tefillin, he is carried aloft, showered with candles and sprayed with perfumed water. Two of his friends lead, holding candlesticks with large decorative candles.
