THE MUSIC

THE MUSIC In Morocco the tradition of Andalusian music was maintained, both in the synagogue and in general. During prayers it is possible to find both general- Sephardic secular tunes and Jewish-Portugese melodies. You could find the psalmodist alongside the chazan adding the beauty of his voice to the hymns, imaginatively and in good taste. He would sing a section concluding with the name of the man, groom or bar-mitzvah boy being called up to the Torah. He participated in every family function and communal celerbation. Talented psalmodists entoned the "Bakashot" (requests), a summary of the "Nuvea", the most highly developed kind of Andalusian music, the pinnacle of Andalusian art.

This is a suite of songs and instrumental sections, arranged according to strict order of expression, with vocal improvisations of the INSHAD and MAWAL kind. The "bakashot" are sung on the Shabbat eves between Sukkot and Pesach (From the week of the Torah portion Breshit until Beshalach and Shirat Hayam). The orchestra which takes part in the NOVA (on weekdays) includes usually an ”ud" (a lute with 5 strings), a KAMANZA (a kind of violin), TARA (framed drum) and DARBOKA(a jug drum). The orchestra which appears on weekdays at family celebrations includes women also, who take part in the dance singing, and the SHICHA, the woman singer who adds harmony to the orchestra with beautiful voice.

Another institution in which the women were the main participants were the Mekaneot", the women-mourners. They would chant doleful verses at family mourning and sad occasions.
